Overview of VMware Cloud Director

VMware Cloud Director is a cloud management platform designed to enable service providers and enterprises to deliver multi-tenant infrastructure and application services based on VMware vSphere environments. It provides a centralized interface to provision, manage, and monitor virtual data centers, virtual machines, networking, and storage resources across multiple tenants.

VMware Cloud Director operates on top of VMware vCenter Server and ESXi hosts, leveraging their capabilities for compute, storage, networking, and security. It introduces an abstraction layer that allows administrators to define Provider Virtual Data Centers (Provider VDCs) and allocate resources to tenant-specific Organization Virtual Data Centers (Org VDCs).

In the context of encryption and key management, VMware Cloud Director relies on the underlying vCenter Server configuration. All cryptographic operations, including virtual machine encryption and key handling, are performed through vCenter and its configured Key Management Server (KMS).
